Lightning is the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder. In the Bible, this would be referred to as "the fire of God", although opinions may vary.

In the Left Behind series, Leon Fortunato would be given the power to call down "fire" in the form of lightning upon those who opposed him and his master Nicolae Carpathia, with the initial use being during Nicolae's publicly-held funeral, in which three disloyal subpotentates were consumed as well as Annie Christopher, who was working at her assigned post at the time it happened.
