Magic is the power to use spells to cause supernatural alterations in the world. The Bible tells us that magic is evil because its power does not come from God Himself, and thus forbids Christians to have anything to do with magic. This is not to be confused with legerdemain, the art of stage magic, which relies mostly on illusions and sleight-of-hand instead of actual magic power. Some supernatural events, commonly called miracles, are understood to be signs intended to establish the credibility of God's chosen prophets, but there is the philosophical problem of distinguishing whether an event is a miracle or sorcery.
In Acts 8, before Simon believed and became baptized, he was a respected sorcerer and was called "the Great Power of God". When Simon saw Philip manifesting the power of the Holy Spirit, Simon wanted to buy the power of the Holy Spirit because he thought that the power is magic (mageiais). Peter rebuked him, and Simon said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.” Whether that was genuine repentance on his part or not remains debatable, as nothing more is said about him in the Scriptures past that point.
According to occasionalism, a causal theory where God is the efficient cause of every event, such "magic" does not technically exist, since other agents do not have ultimate causal power to effect any change upon objects. Also, since every event is caused by God, there is no meaningful distinction between natural and supernatural events, other than some events are more unusual than others, as these unusual events ostensibly violate the laws of nature.
In the Left Behind series, magicians of all sorts appear wielding various powers to deceive those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. Tsion Ben-Judah warns those who are followers of his online ministry that those people are working under the power of Satan, and one should be careful not to be deceived by them.
In Battling the Commander, while Lionel Washington was flipping through the channels on a television, Lionel and Judd Thompson Jr. espied a program approved by the Enigma Babylon One World Faith that taught views how to cast spells upon their enemies. It is unknown whether the spells taught in the program were ineffective or that the spells taught there really enabled the views to harness a demonic power, provided that the spells were performed properly.
When Aron Ben-Eliezar saw Orcus reattach the severed arm of a swordsman at a Miracle Fair, he exclaimed that it had to be a trick. Mitchell Stein replied, "It is real power, but it is not power of God. It is the power of the evil one."
While Nicolae Carpathia was mourning the loss of the two fighter-bomber pilots who attacked Petra, he said that the leaders of Petra were responsible for the tragedy of the oceans and the seas (the second Bowl Judgment). Carpathia said that he would not negotiate with these "international terrorists" and "purveyors of black magic who have used their wicked spells to cause such devastation".
Leon Fortunato's powers, which include lightning attacks and the incineration of Hattie Durham, can be considered magic, given that its source is Nicolae Carpathia, who was at the time indwelt by Satan.
