Marijuana, also known as cannabis or by its street names pot, dope, grass, reefer, weed, ganja, and Mary Jane, is a plant that is used as a smoking herb or ingested in food preparations. It contains a psychoactive chemical known as Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. It induces mild euphoria followed by a sense of general relaxation and well-being, although it can also temporarily impair a user's motor coordination. One of its known side effects is that it can cause its users to have a sense of paranoia, while another is that it gives its user the case of "the munchies". However, contrary to popular media depictions of the drug, it hardly gives anybody who uses it hallucinations. It is considered an illegal substance in most countries and is strictly prohibited for uses outside of medicine in areas that have allowed for limited and regulated legalization.
Though it is highly debated, it has been suggested that the ancient Israelites may have used cannabis in their worship of God. However, cannabis is a substance that is considered sinful (and unlawful) to indulge in by certain Christian denominations, as they deem it to be harmful to human bodies that are meant to be temples of the Holy Spirit.
